Expert Neck Pain in Birmingham
Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints we see — and one of the most disruptive. A neck that won’t turn properly, persistent stiffness, aching that radiates into the shoulders and arms, or headaches that start at the base of the skull — these symptoms affect your concentration, your sleep and your daily life in ways that go well beyond simple discomfort.
At Harborne Chiropractic Clinic, neck pain is among the conditions we treat most frequently and most effectively. Our chiropractors assess the cervical spine thoroughly — identifying the underlying mechanical cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating the pain itself — and build a treatment plan designed to resolve the problem, not manage it indefinitely.
Why Neck Pain So Often Becomes Chronic
The cervical spine is one of the most mechanically complex and load-bearing structures in the body. It supports the full weight of the head — approximately 5kg on average — through every movement of the day, while housing the nerve roots that supply the arms, hands and much of the upper body.
Modern life places the cervical spine under sustained, asymmetric load that it was not designed to tolerate: hours of forward head posture at screens, prolonged driving, looking down at phones and carrying bags on one shoulder. These habitual patterns create chronic muscle tension, restricted joint mobility and, over time, degenerative changes in the cervical discs and facet joints.
The reason neck pain frequently returns after rest or short courses of treatment is that neither addresses the underlying mechanical dysfunction. The joints that have lost mobility, the muscles that have adapted into chronic tension, and the postural habits that sustain the problem all remain unchanged. Effective treatment must address all three.

Types of Neck Pain We Treat
Acute Neck Pain and Wry Neck
Sudden onset neck pain with severely restricted movement — sometimes waking up unable to turn the head at all. Often caused by acute facet joint irritation or muscle spasm triggered by an awkward movement or sleeping position. Highly responsive to chiropractic treatment, with most patients experiencing significant improvement within two or three sessions.
Chronic Neck Pain and Stiffness
Long-standing neck pain that has become a background feature of daily life — often punctuated by acute flare-ups. Chronic neck pain nearly always involves a combination of restricted joint mobility, deep muscle weakness and compensatory patterns that have built up over years. Treatment addresses each of these layers, combining hands-on treatment with rehabilitation to restore lasting function.
Cervical Radiculopathy (Trapped Nerve)
When a nerve root in the cervical spine is compressed or irritated — by a disc bulge, degenerative narrowing or inflamed joint — pain, numbness, tingling or weakness can radiate into the shoulder, arm and hand. The exact distribution of symptoms depends on which nerve level is affected. Cervical radiculopathy is one of the most important neck conditions to diagnose accurately — because the treatment differs significantly from straightforward mechanical neck pain.
Our chiropractors are experienced in the clinical assessment of cervical nerve root involvement, including neurological testing and orthopaedic examination to establish the level and severity of compression. The majority of cases respond well to conservative treatment — spinal mobilisation, soft tissue work, nerve mobilisation techniques and targeted rehabilitation.
Whiplash and Post-Traumatic Neck Pain
Neck pain arising from road traffic accidents, falls or sports impacts. Whiplash-associated disorder produces a complex mixture of joint injury, muscle strain, ligament damage and neurological sensitisation that requires careful, staged treatment. Early intervention significantly improves long-term outcomes — delayed treatment allows compensatory patterns and central sensitisation to establish themselves, making recovery considerably more complex.
Neck Pain with Headaches
Dysfunction in the upper cervical spine is one of the most common — and most overlooked — drivers of recurring headaches. Pain that begins at the base of the skull and spreads into the temples, forehead or behind the eyes, accompanied by neck stiffness, is a characteristic pattern of cervicogenic headache. If your headaches and neck pain coexist, treating the cervical spine addresses both simultaneously.
Postural and Occupational Neck Pain
Neck pain driven by desk work, screen use, driving and sustained postures. Increasingly the most common presentation we see — and highly preventable with the right combination of treatment, postural correction and workplace ergonomic advice. If your neck pain is clearly related to how you spend your working day, our assessment will include a detailed review of your working setup and posture.

How We Treat Neck Pain at Harborne
Your initial consultation begins with a thorough clinical history and physical examination of the cervical and thoracic spine, shoulders and neurological function. We take time to understand not just your symptoms but the full context — your occupation, posture, activity levels, sleep and any previous treatment — because all of these shape both the diagnosis and the treatment plan.
Treatment is built around what we find and may include:
Cervical and thoracic spinal manipulation and mobilisation
Restoring joint mobility, reducing pain and muscle spasm
Soft tissue therapy
Targeting the deep and superficial muscles of the neck, upper back and shoulders
Neural mobilisation
Specific techniques for nerve root irritation and cervical radiculopathy
Deep neck flexor rehabilitation
Retraining the deep stabilising muscles of the cervical spine that weaken in chronic neck pain
Postural correction and ergonomic advice
Addressing the workplace and lifestyle factors sustaining the problem
Dry needling
Where chronic muscle tension and trigger points are a significant contributor
Kinesiology taping
To support postural correction and reduce muscle overload between sessions
Because our chiropractors work alongside physiotherapists and sports massage therapists under one roof, we can draw on the full clinical toolkit where the presentation benefits from a combined approach. Neck pain with significant muscle involvement, for example, frequently responds best to a combination of chiropractic joint treatment and targeted soft tissue therapy in the same week.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Attention
The vast majority of neck pain is mechanical in origin and safe to treat conservatively. However, certain presentations require urgent medical assessment. Please seek immediate attention if your neck pain is accompanied by:
- Severe neck stiffness with fever, headache and sensitivity to light — this may indicate meningitis
- Neck pain following significant trauma such as a fall, road traffic accident or sports impact
- Progressive weakness, numbness or loss of coordination in the arms or hands
- Difficulty walking, loss of balance or changes in bladder or bowel function alongside neck pain
- Neck pain with unexplained weight loss or in someone with a history of cancer
- A pulsating sensation or mass in the neck
We screen for all red flag presentations at your initial assessment. If anything raises concern, we refer you promptly and appropriately.
