Expert Pregnancy Care in Birmingham

Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding experiences a body goes through. As your posture, weight distribution and biomechanics change week by week, the strain placed on your spine, pelvis and joints can be significant — and for many women, genuinely debilitating.

At Harborne Chiropractic Clinic, we have chiropractors with specific postgraduate training in pregnancy chiropractic care. We provide safe, effective, hands-on treatment throughout all trimesters — helping women manage pain, maintain mobility and feel more comfortable during one of the most transformative periods of their lives.

Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes — when provided by a chiropractor with appropriate pregnancy-specific training, chiropractic care is safe throughout all stages of pregnancy. It is a non-invasive, drug-free approach, which makes it particularly well suited to pregnant women who want to avoid medication for pain management.

Treatment during pregnancy uses adapted techniques and positioning to ensure your comfort and safety at every stage. We use specialist pregnancy pillows and modified approaches so that you can lie comfortably without any pressure on your abdomen. Techniques are always selected with your stage of pregnancy and individual presentation in mind.

We work alongside your midwife or GP as part of your wider maternity care. If at any point we feel that your presentation requires a different clinical pathway, we will tell you clearly and promptly.

How Pregnancy Changes Your Body — and How Chiropractic Can Help

During pregnancy, your body undergoes a series of profound physical changes. Your centre of gravity shifts forward as your bump grows, increasing the curve in your lower back and placing new demands on your pelvis and hips. The hormone relaxin — which loosens ligaments in preparation for birth — can cause instability and discomfort throughout the pelvis and spine. Posture adapts continuously, often creating compensatory strain in the mid and upper back, neck and shoulders.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy addresses these mechanical changes directly — reducing pain, restoring joint mobility and supporting the pelvis in maintaining optimal alignment throughout your pregnancy.

Conditions We Treat During Pregnancy

Pain in the front or back of the pelvis, often radiating into the hips and thighs, is one of the most common and debilitating pregnancy complaints. Affecting mobility, sleep and daily activities, PGP and SPD can develop at any stage of pregnancy. Chiropractic care helps stabilise and mobilise the pelvis, reducing pain and improving function.

The shifting centre of gravity and increased lumbar curve during pregnancy places significant load on the lower back. Chiropractic adjustments, mobilisation and soft tissue work can provide meaningful relief — reducing the reliance on pain medication and helping you stay active and comfortable.

The growing uterus and postural changes of pregnancy can place pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing pain, numbness or tingling that radiates from the lower back into the buttock and leg. Chiropractic care addresses the mechanical contributors to sciatic pain without the use of medication.

As posture adapts to a growing bump, the mid and upper back, ribcage and shoulders often carry compensatory tension and pain. This is particularly common in the second and third trimesters and can be effectively addressed with gentle mobilisation and soft tissue treatment.

Sharp or aching pain in the lower abdomen or groin caused by tension in the round ligaments supporting the uterus. Chiropractic care can reduce pelvic and spinal tension that contributes to round ligament discomfort.

Postural changes, fatigue and disrupted sleep during pregnancy frequently contribute to neck tension and headaches. Gentle cervical mobilisation and soft tissue treatment can provide safe, drug-free relief.

The Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment protocol developed for use during pregnancy. It focuses on the sacrum and the balance of the pelvis and surrounding soft tissues, with the aim of reducing intrauterine constraint — the tension in the uterine environment that can affect the baby’s positioning and the mother’s comfort.
While the Webster Technique is not a method for turning breech babies, a balanced and well-aligned pelvis creates the optimal environment for the baby to move into the best possible position naturally. It is commonly used from the second trimester onwards and is particularly sought after by women whose babies are in a non-optimal position in the later stages of pregnancy.

Sian is trained in the Webster Technique and offers this as part of her pregnancy chiropractic care at Harborne.

Postnatal Chiropractic Care

The physical demands of pregnancy don’t end at birth. The postnatal period brings its own significant musculoskeletal challenges — from the strain of feeding and carrying a newborn, to the gradual return of the pelvis and ligaments to their pre-pregnancy state.

We support women through the postnatal period as well as pregnancy itself — addressing the mechanical impact of birth, supporting recovery and helping new mothers stay mobile and comfortable during the demanding early months of parenthood.
