Everything You Need to Know

What to Expect at Your First Sports Physiotherapy Appointment

Your initial assessment is thorough and unhurried. We do not use it to sell you a package. We use it to understand your injury properly, and the demands of your sport, before recommending anything.

Full subjective history

We start by understanding your symptoms in detail, including when they began, how they have changed, what aggravates and eases them, your training load and your relevant medical history. Crucially, we discuss what you want to get back to, whether that is a specific event, a return to full contact or simply pain-free training.

Physical and functional assessment

We carry out a structured physical examination, assessing movement quality, joint range, muscle strength, flexibility and neurological function. Where relevant, we use sport-specific functional tests to reproduce your symptoms and identify their true source, rather than treating the site of pain in isolation.

Clear diagnosis and treatment plan

You will receive a clear explanation of our findings, what is causing your symptoms, why conservative treatment is appropriate and what a realistic return to sport looks like. We set defined goals and give you a timeline, not a vague let us see how it goes.

After Treatment

In most cases, treatment begins at your first appointment. You will also leave with a clear, progressive home exercise programme, because meaningful recovery and long-term resilience are built between sessions as well as during them.

Our sports physiotherapy is hands-on and evidence-based. Depending on your injury, sport and goals, treatment may include:
  • Manual therapy joint mobilisation and manipulation to restore range of movement.
  • Soft tissue techniques targeting muscle tension, fascial restriction and trigger points.
  • Progressive exercise rehabilitation structured, sport-specific programmes to rebuild strength, power and movement control.
  • Neuromuscular re-education retraining the movement patterns that contribute to injury and re-injury.
  • Taping and strapping to offload injured structures during recovery or support a graded return to sport.
  • Dry needling where clinically indicated for muscle pain and trigger points.
  • strong>Return-to-sport planning a graded, criteria-based progression back to full training and competition.
  • Education and self-management so you understand your injury and can reduce the risk of it recurring.

The Advantage of a Multi-Disciplinary Clinic

Many sports injury clinics operate in isolation. At Harborne, your physiotherapist works alongside our chiropractors, sports massage therapists and shockwave therapy specialists every day. That means:
  • Complex or overlapping injuries get a second clinical perspective without you needing a separate referral
  • Treatment can be combined where clinically appropriate, for example sports massage alongside rehabilitation for a stubborn soft tissue injury
  • If shockwave therapy would accelerate recovery from a chronic tendon problem, we can integrate it into your plan immediately
  • You are never passed between clinics or lost in a referral pathway
