Expert Paediatric Care in Birmingham

From newborns struggling to feed or turn their head, to toddlers with growing pains and teenagers with sports injuries — parents bring children to us at every stage. What they all have in common is a parent who knows something isn’t right and wants proper clinical answers.

At Harborne Chiropractic Clinic, we have chiropractors with specific postgraduate training in paediatric care. We treat children of all ages — from newborns through to teenagers — using gentle, age-appropriate techniques that are a world away from adult chiropractic treatment. Our approach is calm, unhurried and built around making both child and parent feel informed and at ease throughout.

Is Chiropractic Safe for Children?

This is the question every parent rightly asks — and it deserves a direct answer. Yes, chiropractic care is safe for children when delivered by a chiropractor with appropriate paediatric training, using techniques specifically adapted for younger patients.

Paediatric chiropractic does not involve the firm adjustments associated with adult treatment. The techniques used on infants and young children are extraordinarily gentle — the pressure applied is no greater than you would use to test the ripeness of a piece of fruit. For older children and teenagers, techniques are adapted to suit the developing musculoskeletal system and the child’s comfort level throughout.

At Harborne, we only treat children with chiropractors who have completed specific postgraduate paediatric training. We also work within clear clinical guidelines, and if we believe a child’s presentation requires a different clinical pathway — including referral to their GP or a paediatrician — we will tell you.

What Can Paediatric Chiropractic Help With?

Children’s musculoskeletal systems are under constant physical demand — from the forces of birth itself, through the tumbles of early childhood, to the postural strain of school life and the repetitive loads of sport. Our paediatric caseload covers a wide range of presentations:

  • Birth-related tension and restricted neck movement — particularly following assisted deliveries (forceps or ventouse)
  • Feeding difficulties associated with restricted head and neck mobility
  • Colic and excessive unsettled behaviour with a musculoskeletal component
  • Positional plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) — assessed and managed alongside appropriate advice
  • Musculoskeletal pain following falls and minor injuries
  • Gait abnormalities and concerns about how a child is walking or running
  • Joint pain and stiffness that is limiting activity
  • Recurring headaches with a postural or musculoskeletal component
  • Back and neck pain from prolonged sitting, screen use and heavy school bags
  • Postural problems — including assessment of scoliosis concerns
  • Growing pains and Osgood-Schlatter disease (knee pain during growth spurts)
  • Sports injuries — sprains, strains and overuse conditions
  • Headaches and tension associated with posture and screen time
    • Hip and joint pain during periods of rapid growth

If your child has a concern that isn’t listed above, call us on 0121 448 6990 and we will advise honestly whether chiropractic is an appropriate pathway.

Everything You Need to Know

What to Expect at Your Child's Appointment

We understand that bringing a child to a clinical appointment — particularly for the first time — can feel daunting for parent and child alike. We take care to make every appointment calm, clear and unhurried.

Clinical History

The appointment starts with a detailed conversation between the clinician and the parent or guardian. We’ll dive into:

  • The child’s full medical history.
  • How the current issue first developed.
  • Specific observations or behaviors you’ve noticed at home.

Physical Assessment

Once we have the background, we move into a gentle physical evaluation. The approach is tailored to your child’s age:

For Infants: The assessment happens on a treatment table with the parent right by their side.

For Older Children: We explain every action before it happens, ensuring the child feels safe and the parent is kept in the loop throughout.

Findings and Explanation

After the assessment, we’ll sit down to discuss what we discovered. We will provide a clear explanation of:

  • Our clinical findings.
  • The recommended treatment plan.
  • The reasoning behind our approach.
  • What to expect from a realistic course of care.

Consent and Collaboration

The final step is your decision. No treatment begins until you have a full understanding of the plan. You remain in total control of the process, and we only move forward with your explicit consent.

A Note for Concerned Parents

We know that the decision to bring your child for chiropractic care often comes after weeks or months of worry, GP visits and unanswered questions. We take that trust seriously. If at any point during assessment we feel that chiropractic is not the right pathway for your child — or that another specialist needs to be involved — we will say so clearly and help you find the right next step.

We are also happy to answer questions before you book. Call us on 0121 448 6990 and speak to one of the team — we will give you an honest assessment of whether we think we can help.
